Yes, I apparently came back after a sudden exit. I have no memory of what I did before that. I'm going to assume the same is true for you.

It's been odd. It's awkward having strangers approach you and insist you're friends. It's something I haven't quite gotten used to yet and it's been about three months for me now. Some friendships I've rekindled, but the history between us is lost.

[She feels worse about the ones who seem genuinely concerned about her because their unfamiliarity just makes her clam up more. Maybe she'll warm up to them in time. For now, though, she's working on it one friend at a time.]

I admit that coping is difficult right now. [ his usual methods don't work here. ] I'm having a hard time accepting that any of it is genuine.

It does take a while, and it's all real. Not only are we alive, we're in this mad new world with different technology and

everything. So far, my biggest problem has been adjusting to staying in one place. I'm not used to having a safe bed to sleep in and a steady flow of income.

It's nice, but it's hard to shake the feeling that I should be moving before someone can stab me while I'm asleep.

Veronica hugged me earlier, and it took everything in me not to break her arm. I was expecting a knife.

[The mental image of Cassian breaking such a friendly woman's arm takes her by surprise. Veronica is such a nice person, she'd never imagined someone breaking her arm on purpose. But that doesn't sound out of character for Cassian either, so she's glad he was able to suppress that impulse.]

Yes, Veronica is very friendly. You'll get used to her amiability in time just as I have.

[And then she realizes she's been assuming he's had the same lifestyle as she has. Of course it couldn't be the case.]

Were you ever on the run like I was or were you fairly settled in your life as a hired gun?

I've never been a mercenary. [ let's get that out of the way right off the bat. he wasn't with the separatists or the rebellion because they paid him to be, though he started out in the separatists out of sheer necessity. the streets of fest were a hard life for a child his age; he's sure he would have done anything to survive at the time. ]

It depended on the mission.
